| Description: |
Google earth is a virtual atlas. The basis of the program is that it contains satellite images of the whole earth, although varying in level of detail from place to place. With easy navigation this enables you to view any part of the world. For most of the western world it also includes (detailed) road maps, it contains airport information, geographical features, etc.
It also offers the possibility to retrieve live data from the internet. Using this feature we can now offer a live view of the current flights in this program. Just like the on-site flight tracker, the position of the aircraft will automatically be updated each two minutes. The big advantage the program offers is the ability to zoom in, on some airports you may even be able to tell which gate the aircraft is parked at. It can also be used when flying to find out more about, or learn the name of volcano's, cities, lakes, etc which are visible from the cockpit. |
| Installation: |
For the flight tracker to work you obviously need Google earth. It is a freeware program, available at: earth.google.com. Once you have downloaded and installed the program, simply click on the google earth logo on our website and open the file called acd_live.kml. This will automaticly show our flights in the program. |
| Using the program: |
On the left in the Google earth program you will see a menu bar called Places. When the acd_live.kml file is loaded, the line 'Air Canadian, live stream' is shown. Below this line, the flights that are currently operated are displayed. By double clicking on the flight number, the Google earth program will 'fly' to the position of the aircraft.
By double clicking on the aircraft symbol, additional information about the flight will be shown, for example the departure and arrival airports, the altitude, aircraft type, speed, etc. |
| Known errors: |
The scripts that make it possible to offer the live feed from our database to Google earth where developed by Air Canadian VA. They are currently in a BETA testing phase, which means there still can be a few errors. During the first weeks/ months of operation we will evaluate the possibilities of this system, the reliability and the impact on the speed of the main website. At the moment Google Earth will occasionally display the error message Fetch of network link "Air Canadian, live stream" failed. Connect failed. Do you want to stop fetching, continue, or ignore errors? We are working to fix this problem. For the moment select continue. |
